The chinampería,
or chinampa farming area, of San Gregorio, a small town east of Xochimilco,
is spread out at the base of the hill from which this photo is taken (looking
northwest). The trees at the edge of the urbanized area are the willows
(ahujotes) lining the edges of the chinampa platforms. Xochimilco’s
chinampas lie further to the west, while those of San Luis, Tlahuac, and
Mixquic are out of view to the east.
