Some farmers continue to plant corn for their
own family’s consumption as seen in this Xochimilco chinampa. Notice
also the tree roots that spread out sideways from each tree in the foreground,
supporting the banks of the field platform. This is the most important
function of the willow trees; they do not anchor fields to the lake bottom
as has often been claimed.
