A recently transplanted
crop of cilantro, lettuce, or radishes extends into the background where
plastic and equipment in a ‘work area’ of the chinampa are
visible. In the foreground (out of focus) are willow branches that have
been embedded in the soil at the edge of the field. Most of these will
sprout roots and grow to a height of 2-3 meters within a few years. In
the background you can see examples of willow trees that have not been
pruned recently and no longer retain their characteristic narrow shape.
