Another example of a ‘double-wide’
chinampa, in San Luis. Like this one, many chinampas have small sections
of different crops each at a different stage of maturity.. Note also the
wooden supports in place for suspending tarps or plastic to protect young
plants. The water level evident in this photo is approximately at the
level commonly reported in historical documents and considered by many
farmers to be ideal. Duckweed (Lemna sp.) and water hyacinth (Eichornia
crassipes) are visible on the surface of the canal in the foreground,
and most of the fields in this scene are fully in use. |
